Purpose: To standardize C-peptide results to those from a Reference method so that results from different laboratories are comparable. This is a fundamental goal of laboratory medicine. We provide pooled and single-donor specimens with reference-method assigned values to manufacturers to facilitate standardization of their C-peptide assays.

Why Standardize? More than 1.4 million people in the US alone have Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the incidence rates are rising. The goal is to prevent future T1D and to maintain and/or restore beta cell function in existing T1D. C-peptide is the most accurate biomarker of beta cell function in beta cell-depleted diabetes (T1D). Preserving beta cell function can prevent short term complications such at hypoglycemia and also prevent long-term complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, heart attack and stroke.
